The 79th Cannes Film Festival kicks off with fewer Hollywood blockbusters and A-list stars, but Peter Jackson is celebrated with an honorary Palme d’Or while James Franco still draws crowds amid controversy; Jane Fonda delivers a pointed opening speech about cinema as resistance, and festival director Thierry Frémaux emphasizes Cannes’ ongoing global stature as the industry navigates streaming, AI, and geopolitical tensions with a lineup leaning on international auteurs.
