Navigating the AI Revolution: Perspectives from Hollywood Writers, VFX Artists, and Consulting Firms

The Hollywood writers' strike has brought to light the concerns of labor exploitation in the entertainment industry due to the rapid advancement of AI technology. While the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) have reached agreements with studios to protect their members from AI exploitation, these deals may not offer sufficient protections given the studios' significant investments in AI. Studios are already developing various uses for machine-learning tools, and it is unlikely they will halt their development. The challenge lies in proving attribution and preventing these tools from learning on any data the studios desire. Additionally, the current agreements may not adequately protect marginalized groups within the industry. The ongoing negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) present an opportunity to further address these concerns and establish mutually beneficial agreements between AI users and those impacted by its use.
