Mixed Reviews for 'Past Lives': A Romance Worth Watching?

"Past Lives" is a semi-autobiographical film about childhood sweethearts Nora and Hae Sung who reconnect digitally after 12 years and meet up again in New York 12 years later. The film tries to be a wistful romance but ends up feeling calculated and unconvincing. While it touches on issues of identity, cultural ties, and rootlessness, it shrinks them down into something negligible and tries to give itself added heft with the idea of inyun, the connection between people built up over all their past lives.
