Background

In August 2026, a Christian metal band named Demon Hunter filed a trademark lawsuit against Netflix over the 'KPop Demon Hunters' franchise, citing potential consumer confusion. This legal dispute highlights the cultural significance and commercial value of the KPop Demon Hunters brand, which has now expanded into a Magic: The Gathering collaboration. The lawsuit underscores the brand's reach and the potential for cross-platform licensing, as seen in the upcoming Secret Lair drop.

How outlets are covering it

MTG Rocks and Star City Games both highlight the excitement surrounding the KPop Demon Hunters and Labyrinth collaborations, noting the positive reception from fans. However, MTG Rocks also points out that the relentless release calendar of Secret Lair is starting to wear thin, with some players expressing frustration over the frequency of drops. ICv2, on the other hand, focuses on the business side of the collaboration, noting that the KPop Demon Hunters tie-in was confirmed by Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks in 2025, and that the Labyrinth and Marvel licenses are part of a broader strategy to expand Magic's IP partnerships. All sources agree that the 'Corn Maze' Superdrop is a significant event, but they differ in their emphasis on the community's reaction and the business implications of the collaborations.
