J. Cole's Controversial Moments: A Recap
TL;DR
J. Cole released a surprise EP including a track called "7 Minute Drill" where he responds to Kendrick Lamar's recent shots. In the song, Cole throws a "warning shot" at Kendrick, employing Jay-Z's "Takeover" tactic to critique Kendrick's catalog and sparse release schedule, but also expresses hesitation and love for his friend. The diss shows Cole's precarious position between two friends, Drake and Kendrick, as the battle lines in rap are drawn, with fans wanting to see major swings from the big names. However, some argue that Cole's measured approach in the rap beef arena may have been too conscientious and almost deferential.
