TL;DR

HBO’s Rooster is a warm half-hour comedy led by Steve Carell as Greg Russo, a midlife reinvention story that sends him back to college to support his daughter; the ensemble is strong and the premise is inviting, but the first six episodes feel a bit overstuffed and too fixated on cancel-culture punchlines, though Carell’s performance and the show's heart make it easy to fall for—season 2 is hoped for.
