Background

Only Murders in the Building has maintained a consistent annual release schedule since its inception, with Season 6 premiering on December 8, 2026. The sixth season, set in London, featured a star-studded guest list and marked the first time the series was filmed outside the United States. The move of the writers' room to New York is a strategic decision to streamline production and reduce the gap between seasons, which had previously been around 12 months but extended to 15 months between Seasons 5 and 6.

Why it matters

The relocation of the writers' room to New York signals a commitment to maintaining the series' annual release schedule and reflects the logistical challenges of producing a show that has expanded its scope to international locations. It also highlights the importance of efficient production processes in the streaming industry, where maintaining a consistent release schedule is crucial for audience engagement and platform competitiveness.

What to watch

The writing team for Season 7 is expected to be finalized soon, with some writers from previous seasons likely to continue. The series is anticipated to return to New York for filming, with a release date in 2027 or early 2028. The official renewal of Season 7 is expected to be announced in the near future.
