South African company Kiara Health will begin manufacturing vaginal rings that protect against HIV, offering a cheaper and more accessible option for women across the continent. The silicone rings, authorized by multiple countries and the World Health Organization, release a drug that helps prevent HIV infections. Currently, 500,000 rings are available at no cost to women in Africa, but the production by Kiara Health is expected to increase to one million annually. The advantage of the ring is its discreet use, allowing women to protect themselves without their partner's knowledge or consent. The price is expected to decrease once production is scaled up, and developers are also working on a three-month version to further reduce costs.
