FDA Warns of Rare, Deadly Side Effect Linked to Common Epilepsy Drugs

The FDA has issued a warning about two widely prescribed anti-epilepsy drugs, levetiracetam and clobazam, which have been linked to a rare but serious allergic reaction called Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome. More than 40 cases of DRESS syndrome have been reported worldwide in people taking these drugs, and the reaction can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated quickly. Patients and healthcare providers are advised to be vigilant for symptoms of DRESS syndrome, such as an unexplained rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes, and to seek immediate medical attention if any unusual symptoms occur. The FDA also cautions against abruptly stopping these medications, as it could lead to uncontrolled seizures. Manufacturers are now required to add warnings about DRESS syndrome to the prescribing information and patient medication guides for these drugs.
