Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus, is spreading at an alarming rate across the United States, with cases increasing by 95% from 2020 to 2021. While Canada has reported 43 cases of the fungal infection since 2012, Health Canada notes that the risk to the general population in Canada is considered very low. Candida auris is highly transmissible and can infect any part of the body, with an estimated 40% mortality rate. The fungal infection is contracted most commonly through contact with affected patients and contaminated surfaces or equipment in healthcare settings.
