Organ Transplant Dispute Resolved Through Arbitration, Ensuring Uninterrupted Flow

The flow of organs to U.S. transplant centers could be disrupted due to a dispute between the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and Buckeye Transplant Services over the use of transplant data. UNOS is threatening to revoke Buckeye's access to the computer network that coordinates organ movement if the company does not comply with its demands. If no deal is reached, 63 transplant centers relying on Buckeye's services would be without organ screening, potentially impacting critically ill patients. Buckeye has sued UNOS, alleging that the organization is trying to monopolize the transplant system. The dispute comes as the government plans to overhaul the troubled U.S. transplant system.
