Researchers at the University of Exeter and start-up company Milbotix have developed AI-powered socks, called SmartSocks, to assist dementia patients in living more independently. The socks can monitor a patient's heart rate, sweat levels, and movement, helping to prevent falls and promote independence. The data collected is sent to an app, which alerts caregivers when the patient appears to be in distress. The socks do not need to be recharged and can be machine washed, offering a simple and convenient solution compared to other wearable devices. The University of Exeter is currently investigating the effectiveness of the SmartSocks for dementia patients.
