Mother's Tragic Loss Inspires Support for Suicide Prevention.

Latishea McAuley, a Lee County woman, lost her 18-year-old daughter, Sierra, to suicide three years ago. Since then, she has been on a mission to fight mental illness among young people. McAuley prepares for "Serena Day," a cookout fundraising event held annually to attract financial donations. She created many trinkets and T-shirts bearing her daughter’s image. McAuley and the nonprofit she created now partners with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to help other families. McAuley now shares her experience with losing Sierra as a warning to parents to talk to their children and get to know them.
