Second death linked to NYC Upper East Side Legionnaires outbreak as cases decline
A second death has been reported in New York City's Legionnaires’ disease cluster on the Upper East Side, with officials noting a sharp decline in new cases and suggesting the outbreak’s source may have been eliminated. The outbreak has produced about 72 cases and more than 50 hospitalizations, with nine people still in hospital. Health officials traced Legionella to 76 cooling towers in Carnegie Hill, Yorkville, and one on the Upper West Side, and ordered remediation after screening-positive towers were disinfected by July 16. The data indicate progress in containment, following the first death announced earlier this week, and officials pledged continued inspections and accountability for non-compliant building owners.
