"Indigenous Life Captured in Photographer's 600,000-Mile Journey"

Photographer Matika Wilbur has published a book titled "Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America," which features portraits and interviews of members of all of the then-562 federally-recognized U.S. tribes. Wilbur's goal was to illustrate Native Americans' diversity and complexity and to correct the one-dimensional, insipid, and degrading depictions of Native Americans in mainstream media and popular culture. The book includes stories about the lasting effects of colonization and relocation, environmental destruction done to Native lands, and the traumatic experience of those who had been taken from their homes as children and sent to Indian boarding schools to be "assimilated."
