The Athletic, a sports subscription publication owned by The New York Times, is cutting nearly 4% of its newsroom, which amounts to almost 20 journalists, and reassigning 20 others to different roles. The layoffs are part of a reorganization that will move away from having one beat reporter cover each team and instead focus on broader coverage. The Athletic has continued to operate at a loss, including one of nearly $36 million from the time of its acquisition by The New York Times in January 2022.
