Jackie the Big Bear bald eagle fights for life as recovery begins

Jackie, Big Bear’s famous bald eagle, remains in critical condition at the Ojai Raptor Center after a July attack by two subadult eagles. Vets are treating severe anemia and kidney inflammation and conducting tests for lead, zinc, and rodenticide, with X-rays showing no foreign objects. Despite the seriousness, Jackie is alert, eating, and capable of standing, signaling progress as wildlife professionals monitor her condition. The rescue timeline: Jackie was spotted July 17, then rescued and transported to the Ojai Raptor Center on July 18. Her mate Shadow and their two eaglets Sandy and Luna remain at the nest. Donations to the Ojai Raptor Center and Friends of Big Bear Valley are being collected to support Jackie’s care and other raptors.
