"Arrests made in case of disabled woman tortured to death by caregivers in New Mexico"

Three caregivers in New Mexico have been arrested and charged with abuse and neglect following the death of a 38-year-old developmentally disabled woman who was found severely dehydrated, drugged, and with numerous open wounds, bedsores, bruises, and lacerations on her body. The caregivers were paid thousands of dollars a month through a special program meant to offer an alternative to institutional care. The case has spurred a statewide review of New Mexico’s entire developmentally disabled waiver system, and more allegations of possible abuse and neglect have been turned up.
