Colorado funeral-home co-owner receives 30-year sentence in corpse-abuse scandal

A Colorado Springs funeral home co-owner, Carie Hallford, was sentenced to 30 years in state prison for a corpse-abuse scheme that left nearly 200 decomposing bodies and defrauded families of about $130,000; her husband Jon Hallford received 40 years, and Carie earlier got an 18-year federal term for related fraud. The couple also admitted to fraudulently obtaining about $882,000 in SBA COVID relief funds. The case spurred tighter state oversight of funeral homes and renewed advocacy for victims.
