Former Memphis Cop Pleads Guilty in Tyre Nichols' Beating Death

Former Memphis police officer Desmond Mills Jr. has pleaded guilty to federal charges of excessive force and obstruction of justice, as well as related state charges, in connection with the beating death of Tyre Nichols. Mills is the first of five former officers charged in Nichols' death to agree to a plea deal. He has also agreed to cooperate as a witness in both federal and state investigations. Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, died three days after being beaten during a traffic stop in January 2023. The remaining four defendants are scheduled for a federal trial in May 2024.
