Fort Worth City Council Approves $3.5M Settlement for Child Witnessing Fatal Police Shooting

The city of Fort Worth, Texas, has approved a $3.5 million settlement in a lawsuit related to the 2019 police shooting death of Atatiana Jefferson. The settlement will be placed in a trust for Jefferson's young nephew, Zion Carr, who witnessed her death at the age of 8. The settlement will cover Carr's college expenses and provide additional payments until he is 40 years old. The judge's final approval is still pending, and a separate lawsuit filed by Jefferson's estate will continue. The settlement comes more than four years after the shooting, in which officer Aaron Dean was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison.
