Indiana Deputy Killed by Inmate's Escape Attempt

A veteran Indiana sheriff's deputy, John Durm, was killed during an inmate escape attempt when the suspect assaulted him and stole a transport vehicle. Durm died in the hospital shortly after the attack. The suspect, identified as Orlando Mitchell, crashed the vehicle into a telephone pole outside the jail's parking lot and was apprehended by sheriff's deputies. Mitchell, who is also facing another murder charge, will be arrested on a preliminary murder charge once released from the hospital. Durm's son is in training to work for the sheriff's office, and his wife also works there. A memorial has been set up in Durm's honor at the Marion County's Community Justice Campus.
