Joran van der Sloot's extradition and plea in Natalee Holloway case

Dutch authorities did not try to prevent the extradition of Joran van der Sloot to the US to face wire fraud and extortion charges related to the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The head of Interpol in Peru denied claims by van der Sloot's defense attorney that Dutch embassy officials had interfered in the extradition process. Van der Sloot, who is serving a 28-year sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of Peruvian heiress Stephany Flores, pleaded not guilty in his first appearance in a Birmingham, Alabama, federal courtroom on Friday and is being held without bail while he awaits trial.
