Louisiana sheriff hit with 30-count indictment over Orleans jail breakout

The Louisiana attorney general announced a 30-count indictment against Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson for alleged malfeasance, false records, obstruction and conspiracy related to the May 16 escape of 10 inmates from the Orleans Justice Center; the sheriff’s chief financial officer, Bianka Brown, was charged on 20 counts in the same case. The escape happened after defective cell locks and a hole in the wall, inmates were recaptured by October, and both defendants face status hearings as security improvements are discussed with the incoming sheriff, Michelle Woodfork.
