"Mexico's Arrest of Notorious Cartel Enforcer 'El Nini' Sparks International Extradition Efforts"

The recent arrest of Nestor Isidro Pérez Salas, an alleged security chief for the Sinaloa cartel, by Mexican authorities may have been highly personal for the Mexican army. Pérez Salas was responsible for ordering a 2019 attack on an unguarded apartment complex where soldiers' families lived, following a failed attempt to capture Sinaloa cartel leader Ovidio Guzman. The attack led to the deaths of 30 people, including 10 military personnel. Pérez Salas is wanted on U.S. charges of conspiracy to import and distribute fentanyl, as well as allegations of torture and gruesome acts of violence. The U.S. government has praised the arrest and requested his extradition.
