Midland mass shooting ends with suspect dead after hourslong standoff

A mass shooting in Midland, Texas left 1 dead and 10 injured as Victor Mata Villarreal opened fire on bystanders and officers before barricading himself in an abandoned veterinary clinic. After an hourslong standoff, Villarreal was found dead in the building around 12:30 p.m. local time. Nine victims were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, with four undergoing surgery and five admitted in stable condition (five since discharged). Villarreal had previously been wanted for attempted capital murder of an officer after a Wednesday car chase; no law enforcement officers were injured.
