Tragedy Strikes: Off-Duty Chicago Police Officer Fatally Wounded Near Home After Shift.

Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston was fatally wounded during a shootout with robbers on her way home from work early Saturday. ShotSpotter, the city’s gunshot detection system, quickly picked up a barrage of gunfire, but it took more than 30 minutes for police and emergency crews to respond to the shooting. Police officials haven’t provided an explanation for the delay, but it appears there was a backlog of calls and a traffic cop was dispatched instead of a patrol car. Retired first deputy police superintendent Anthony Riccio said, "Had somebody gotten there sooner, it may have had a different outcome certainly."
