Youth Crime Spree Plagues Oakland, Mayor Pledges Action

Oakland has experienced 100 robberies in a single week this month, with 50 of them occurring in one weekend, according to the city's interim Police Chief Darren Allison. Law enforcement officials have noted a rise in targeted robberies, with some perpetrators staking out construction sites or work trucks, seeking expensive power tools. The alleged perpetrators are increasingly children as young as 12. Police have made arrests, including of nine children connected to more than three dozen robberies, but it is unclear what happens after these arrests. The city is shifting resources to address the crime wave and is emphasizing the need for violence-prevention services and interventions outside the criminal justice system.
