The faculty strike at Rutgers University continues into its third day without a resolution, but both Governor Phil Murphy and union leadership have reported positive developments in the first two days of closed-door negotiations. The strike has caused a string of canceled classes at New Jersey’s largest university with about three weeks to go before the end of the spring semester for 67,000 students. The major sticking points are proposals for the most vulnerable workers, including guaranteed multi-year funding for graduate students, and better benefits for graduate fellows, raising adjuncts up to the per-class rate non-tenure track faculty receive, and job security for adjuncts.
