"Tax-Free Weekends: A Guide to Saving on Back-to-School Shopping"

Many school districts in New Mexico have started their academic year before the designated tax-free weekend for back-to-school shopping, due to a new law requiring 180 instructional days. The tax-free weekend, established in 2005, cannot be changed by the Taxation and Revenue Department and would require legislative action. However, House Democrats have expressed willingness to adjust the dates of the tax-free weekend in the next session. The tax holiday, which suspends the collection of gross receipts tax on qualifying items, is scheduled for August 4-6, 2023.
