Massachusetts' Aug. 8–9 tax-free weekend waives the 6.25% sales tax on many consumer items under $2,500 (with electronics, furniture and back-to-school gear among the best deals), but business purchases, meals, telecom, tobacco and alcohol remain taxed, as do vehicles under $2,500; plan around the limits and watch for retailer promos to maximize savings.
Many school districts in New Mexico have started their academic year before the designated tax-free weekend for back-to-school shopping, due to a new law requiring 180 instructional days. The tax-free weekend, established in 2005, cannot be changed by the Taxation and Revenue Department and would require legislative action. However, House Democrats have expressed willingness to adjust the dates of the tax-free weekend in the next session. The tax holiday, which suspends the collection of gross receipts tax on qualifying items, is scheduled for August 4-6, 2023.
