Mysterious Tar Balls and Oil Plague Jersey Shore Beaches

The Coast Guard and other agencies in New Jersey are investigating the discovery of tar balls along the Jersey Shore on Long Branch and Monmouth beaches. The tar balls, ranging in size from 1-2 inches, were found near Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park. While tar balls are typically remnants of an oil spill, they can also be produced by natural seeps. Officials have dispatched a pollution response team to investigate, and beachgoers and mariners are advised to avoid contact with the tar balls. No oil pollution was observed in the water during a flight conducted by the Coast Guard.
