"Alarming Surge: Mississippi Witnesses 10-Fold Rise in Syphilis Cases Among Newborns"

A report from the John D. Bower School of Population Health at the University of Mississippi Medical Center reveals that the number of babies born with syphilis in Mississippi has increased tenfold since 2016, rising from 10 to 110 cases. The hospitalization rate also rose from 2.0 to 24.8 per 100,000. The majority of affected infants were African American (71.1%), and risk factors included being covered by Medicaid and being older than 3 days old. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a nationwide increase in babies born with syphilis, with over 2,000 cases reported in 2021 alone. Syphilis infection during pregnancy can lead to severe complications for both the mother and the baby, emphasizing the need for comprehensive public health policies and early diagnosis and treatment.
