Narcan now available over-the-counter to combat opioid overdoses.

The US FDA has approved an over-the-counter version of the opioid overdose antidote Narcan, which will be available in stores and online by late summer. The nasal spray will come in a package of two 4-milligram doses, in case the person overdosing does not respond to the first dose. The drug’s maker, Emergent BioSolutions, says most overdoses can be reversed with a single dose. The move is expected to improve access to naloxone, increase the number of locations where it’s available, and help reduce opioid overdose deaths throughout the country.
