Martin Luther King Jr.'s views were once considered radical by much of white America, including the government, and he was the subject of FBI surveillance. Despite this, he is now widely lauded as a hero for his nonviolent crusade against racial injustice. The fight to establish MLK Day as a federal holiday was a long one, eventually succeeding in 1986, and it is now dedicated to volunteer service in honor of King's legacy.
