Celebrating 67 Years: Alaska Native Scouts Rescue Navy Crew.

Members of the First Scouts unit of the Alaska National Guard were honored with Alaska Heroism Medals for rescuing 11 crewmen of a U.S. Navy P2V-5 Neptune maritime patrol aircraft that was attacked by two Soviet MiG-15 fighters in 1955. The guardsmen, who lived on St. Lawrence Island, helped the crew get medical attention and alerted military authorities the men were safe. The 16 guardsmen and an unknown Air Force member were only given letters of appreciation at the time, but on Tuesday, the Alaska Native men received the recognition they deserved.
