El Paso declares state of emergency as Title 42 expires and border facilities reach capacity.

El Paso has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of an influx of immigrants when Title 42, a pandemic-era immigration policy used to quickly expel migrants, expires on May 11. The city has been preparing to open two temporary shelters and the emergency declaration will allow access to additional resources to keep residents and asylum-seekers safe. The Biden administration plans to increase deportations and anyone who doesn’t use one of the available pathways to enter the country legally could be barred from requesting asylum in the future.
