Migrants are rushing to the US-Mexico border ahead of the expiration of pandemic-related asylum restrictions known as Title 42, fearing that stricter new policies would make it far more difficult to enter the US. The Biden administration has been unveiling strict new measures to replace Title 42, which has allowed border officials since March 2020 to quickly return migrants seeking asylum back over the border, on grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19. Holding facilities along the border were already filling up, and Border Patrol agents were told Wednesday to begin releasing some migrants with instructions to appear at an immigration office in the United States within 60 days.
