The US and Canada have agreed to close a loophole that allowed tens of thousands of asylum seekers to cross the border between the two countries via Roxham Road, a back road between New York state and Quebec. Under the new policy, any asylum seekers who lack US or Canadian citizenship and are caught within 14 days of crossing will be sent back across the border. The move comes as the US Border Patrol responds to a steep increase in illegal southbound crossings along the Canadian border, with agents stopping migrants entering illegally from Canada 628 times in February, more than five times the same period a year earlier.
