Guatemala's Democracy Under Threat: Spanish PM, UN, and Prosecutors Raise Concerns

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has condemned the actions of Guatemalan prosecutors, calling them a "threat to democracy," after they questioned the election victory of President-elect Bernardo Arevalo. Arevalo rejected the prosecutors' attempt to invalidate his election triumph, labeling it a "perverse" and "attempted coup." Spain, currently holding the Council of the European Union's rotating presidency, has been working to improve relations between the EU and Latin America and hopes to finalize a trade deal between the EU and South American trade bloc Mercosur by the end of the year.
