Taliban eliminates ISIS leader behind Kabul airport bombing.
TL;DR
The Taliban killed the mastermind of the August 2021 suicide bombing at the Kabul airport that killed 13 US troops and about 170 Afghans during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Islamic State leader was killed during a series of battles early this month in southern Afghanistan between the Taliban and the Islamic State group’s affiliate. US officials confirmed the death with high confidence, but declined to provide many details because of sensitivities in the intelligence gathering. The US played no role in the killing and did not coordinate at all with the Taliban.
