US Court Rules Drug Users Can Own Guns

A federal appeals court in the United States has ruled that a law prohibiting users of illegal drugs from owning firearms is unconstitutional when applied to the case of a marijuana user. The court concluded that the law violated the man's Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms." This ruling follows a Supreme Court decision last year that expanded gun rights and declared that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense. The appeals court judges noted that while some limits on an intoxicated person's right to carry a weapon may be justified, disarming a sober citizen based solely on past drug usage is not justified.
