Appeals court denies Trump presidential immunity in E. Jean Carroll defamation suit

An appeals court has ruled that former President Donald Trump cannot claim presidential immunity in a defamation lawsuit brought by journalist E. Jean Carroll, who accused him of sexual assault. The court stated that Trump waited too long to claim immunity and that it can be waived like other forms of immunity. Trump's attorney called the ruling "fundamentally flawed" and vowed to continue fighting. This is the second defamation case from Carroll against Trump, who was previously ordered to pay her $5 million in damages. The trial will now proceed to address damages, as the jury verdict on defamation will carry over. Trump has also appealed a ruling that presidential immunity does not protect him in a criminal case related to the 2020 election.
