Former firefighter identified as Wynnefield gunman; three Philadelphia officers shot, suspect killed

Three Philadelphia police officers were shot in Wynnefield during a late-night confrontation; one officer was hit in the face, another in the hip, and a third in the leg, with all three in stable condition. The suspect, 57-year-old Eric Franks, a former firefighter and Marine veteran, was killed in the exchange. A fourth uninjured officer and the wounded officers returned fire. One officer has been released from the hospital, while the others remain hospitalized. Investigators recovered a licensed 9mm handgun and about 50 pieces of ballistic evidence; the incident remains under investigation.
