San Jose sergeant shot; armed robbery suspect killed in standoff

A San Jose police sergeant was critically injured but stabilized after an armed robbery suspect opened fire inside a home, where officers found him after a pursuit that began with two weekend robberies. The suspect, 39-year-old Anthony Chavez of Campbell, fled, crashed vehicles, and hid in a family’s home before being shot by officers and dying at the scene. Chavez had an extensive violent-criminal history. The officer-involved shooting is under investigation and marks San Jose PD’s second such incident in 2026.
