Kilauea, the youngest and most active volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, erupted early Wednesday morning, sending fountains of lava spewing skyward before pooling and spreading across its summit. The eruption was confined to the volcano's main crater, and there were no major threats to infrastructure or human life. The volcano alert level was elevated to a watch from a warning, and some areas of Hawaii Volcano National Park were closed due to gas fumes. Kilauea has been active since 2020, and this is its fourth eruption in three years.
