Rampaging Circus Elephant Roams Montana City Streets
TL;DR
Viola, a 58-year-old elephant with the Jordan World Circus, escaped from her handlers in Butte, Montana, after being spooked by a car backfiring while getting a bath. She was captured after a brief 10-minute chase and went on to perform in the circus that evening. Animal advocacy groups PETA and PAWS criticized Viola's escape, alleging a history of abuse and involuntary servitude by the circus supplier, Carson & Barnes Circus.
