Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, has ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to the border with Mexico, criticizing the federal government's handling of border security and calling it a "humanitarian crisis." The move is seen as a rebuke to President Joe Biden, also a Democrat, as border security becomes a prominent issue in the upcoming 2024 presidential campaign. Governor Hobbs did not specify the number of troops to be deployed but stated they would be stationed near the Lukeville port of entry and the San Miguel crossing. The closure of the Lukeville legal border crossing by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has redirected resources to combat increased illegal smuggling of migrants elsewhere on the border. Hobbs had previously requested the reopening of the Lukeville port of entry and reimbursement for border security spending, which she claims the Biden administration has failed to respond to.
