The Border Patrol union criticized the Department of Homeland Security for publicly announcing "targeted" immigration enforcement in El Paso, Texas, calling it a "sad joke" and a "pandering PR stunt." The union argued that the announcement gives migrants a heads up to evade arrest and that serious law enforcement leaders don't behave this way. The announcement comes as El Paso is already overwhelmed by thousands of fresh arrivals, with an estimated 80,000 South American migrants heading for the US. Title 42, the pandemic-era policy that allowed the US to expel 2.8 million asylum seekers over the past three years due to a health emergency, is due to end at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
