Chicago Revises Renters Protections with Small-Landlord Exemptions

Mayor Brandon Johnson's administration released a revised Protecting Renters Ordinance that would exempt owner-occupied buildings with six units or fewer from just‑cause eviction and relocation-assistance requirements, in exchange for longer notice before nonrenewals (90–180 days). Relocation payments are reduced (about $4,000 for certain no‑fault evictions and $7,500 in other cases), and a first‑year grace period shields landlords from relocation payments. Other protections—like capping security deposits and banning move-in fees—remain, while utility-billing notices and social-media retaliation rules are clarified; the plan seeks final committee approval in mid-September and a full City Council vote soon after.
